510 Lacrosse History

In 2006, the East Bay Lacrosse Clinics (EBLC) were started by the coaches of Berkeley High, Piedmont High (Kevin Kelley), and Bishop O’Dowd (Tyler Kreitz), with the specific aim of growing the lacrosse community in the Berkeley, Oakland and surrounding central East Bay areas. The community responded in kind and Team 510 was formed; a select all-star team of 510 Area players to compete in tournaments throughout the state.

After successful summers of travel lacrosse the founders of the EBLC saw the opportunity for a fun, competitive field lacrosse tournament in the central bay area. The fall of 2009 saw the first 510 Challenge tournament held at Bishop O'Dowd High School in a cold December rain. Despite the weather, 9 teams made it out and competed for the first 510 Cup. The Foothill-Amador Valley based team 925 Thunder won the first 510 Challenge over a talented Sniper 925 squad.

With momentum and positive feedback 510 Lacrosse grew and the lacrosse community grew with it. The Summer of 2010 saw the first 510 Gibbons Men's Lacrosse team formed for the Lake Tahoe Lacrosse tournament. That fall the second 510 Challenge grew to two divisions. Blessed with clear skies and great weather 925 Thunder again prevailed, this time in the Way Too Solid (Varsity) division over with the tough and athletic 925 Gamecocks. The Scurvy Terps prevailed in the Solid (JV) division, winning over a game Sniper 925.

After another summer of growth and the 510 Gibbons again taking on Tahoe, the 2011 510 Challenge grew to capacity. Two fields and Two locations again enjoyed perfect weather in Oakland as Oakland High High School played host to the Solid Division and Bishop O'Dowd High School held the Way Too Solid division. In one of the most dominating performances in either division Nor Cal Platinum won the Solid division with a superb display of lacrosse. The Way Too Solid division was more competitive than ever with each team giving rise to the notion that Northern California lacrosse is a true hotbed. In the final two of the original 510 Challenge teams, the 925 Gamecocks and Sniper 925, battled it out an exciting game with the 925 Gamecocks coming out on top.

The Summer of 2011 saw the 510 Gibbons expand with more and more players joining the alumni ranks, as well as an increased focus on growing lacrosse in Oakland with Kevin Kelley's founding of the Oakland Lacrosse Club.

The 510 Challenge's move to Treasure Island will acommodate a larger group of teams at one location as well as allow teams to finish earlier in the day.

We look forward to seeing our friends in the lacrosse community in the years to come and hope everyone can make it out for the 2012 510 Challenge.
